Discover Tra Que Vegetable Village in Hoi An and experience a day as a real farmer. Learn about organic farming, savor fresh local cuisine, and enjoy the peaceful countryside. A must-visit destination!
When thinking of Hoi An, people often imagine ancient, moss-covered streets, sparkling lanterns, or the romantic Hoai River. But tucked away not far from the ancient town's center is a destination that offers a completely different experience, a place that brings you back to the rustic simplicity of the Vietnamese countryside. That is Tra Que Vegetable Village – a lush green oasis where you can temporarily set aside the hustle and bustle of life to become a real farmer.

Tra Que Vegetable Village is located in Cam Ha commune, Hoi An city, Quang Nam province, just about 3km northeast of the ancient town center. This ancient village has a history of over 400 years and is renowned for more than 20 types of herbs and vegetables with a unique flavor unmatched anywhere else. What sets Tra Que apart is its completely organic farming method. The local farmers do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Instead, they use a special type of seaweed collected from the Co Co River to fertilize the plants. It is this seaweed that gives Tra Que vegetables their rich, pure taste and makes them absolutely safe for health.
Upon entering the village, you will immediately feel a strange sense of peace. The lush, straight rows of green vegetables are beautifully arranged, interspersed with the gentle aroma of mint, basil, and perilla wafting through the air. This is not just an agricultural production site but also a living cultural heritage, a place that preserves the traditional values of the local people.
The distance from Hoi An ancient town to Tra Que is short and easy to travel. You have many transportation options, but for the most complete experience, a bicycle is the top choice.
This is the core and most fascinating activity when visiting Tra Que. A "Farmer for a Day" tour will take you through exciting emotions and unforgettable experiences.
Morning: Starting the farmer's journey
Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by hospitable farmers with a refreshing glass of é leaf drink. Then, you will be given traditional farmer's attire (ba ba shirt, conical hat) to get ready for farm work. The guide will introduce the village's history, the types of vegetables, and especially the organic farming process with seaweed. You will learn how to use familiar farming tools like hoes, shovels, and watering cans properly.
The main activity begins when you step into the garden yourself. You will be guided on how to hoe the soil, make beds, sow seeds, and water the plants using traditional twin watering cans. The feeling of carrying the heavy cans on your shoulders, walking carefully to water the vegetable beds evenly, will make you understand the hardship of farmers better. Although a bit tiring, the laughter and joy of immersing yourself in the work will be a worthy reward.
Noon: Enjoying the fruits of labor and relaxing
After a morning of work, the most exciting part is the cooking class and lunch. You will participate in a class to cook Hoi An's specialty dishes like Banh Xeo (Vietnamese savory pancake), Tam Huu (a special spring roll from Tra Que)... right in the garden. The interesting part is that you will get to pick the freshest vegetables from the very garden you just tended to for your cooking. Lunch with dishes you made yourself, amidst the green space of the vegetable village, will surely be a memorable culinary experience.
After the meal, you will experience an herbal foot soak. Your tired feet after the farming session will be relaxed in warm water mixed with medicinal herbs picked from the garden, helping to wash away all fatigue.
Tra Que vegetables are the soul of many Hoi An specialty dishes. Their flavor not only enhances the food but also creates a unique characteristic. When you are here, you cannot miss the opportunity to enjoy a truly green cuisine:
Entrance fee: Currently, the entrance fee to Tra Que Vegetable Village is 35,000 VND per person. This price includes free exploration and watching the locals work. If you want to join the "Farmer for a Day" tour with a full range of activities, the price will range from 200,000 VND to 500,000 VND depending on the tour operator and included services (like cooking classes, lunch...).
Ideal time: You can visit Tra Que at any time of the year. However, the best times are from February to April and from August to October. During these months, the weather in Hoi An is cool, with little rain and mild sun, which is very favorable for outdoor activities. You should visit the village early in the morning (around 7-9 AM) or in the cool afternoon (around 3-5 PM) to avoid the heat and enjoy the freshest air.
In the context of growing interest in sustainable tourism, Tra Que Vegetable Village emerges as a prime example of Green Tourism in Hoi An. This trip is not just about sightseeing; it is also an opportunity for tourists to learn and connect.
Leaving the noisy city behind, a day at Tra Que Vegetable Village will help you find balance, regenerate energy, and bring back peaceful, precious memories. This is not just a trip, but a journey back to the core values of life.
