Northern Vietnam, the cradle of the wet rice civilization, is not only famous for its majestic landscapes but also preserves a vast intangible cultural treasure. Among them, traditional festivals are the soul, crystallizing the cultural, religious, and historical values of the nation over thousands of years. Every spring, villages and cities across the North burst with the atmosphere of unique festivals, attracting millions of domestic and international tourists. Participating in Northern Vietnam festivals is not just a simple travel experience but also a journey back to the roots, to deeply understand the soul and identity of the Vietnamese people.

The Perfume Pagoda Festival, taking place at the Huong Son scenic complex in My Duc district, Hanoi, is known as the longest festival in the country. Starting from the 6th day of the first lunar month and lasting until the end of the third lunar month, the festival attracts tens of thousands of Buddhists and pilgrims to this sacred land. What makes this festival special is not just its scale or duration, but the wonderful blend of spiritual and ecological tourism.
The pilgrimage journey begins with a boat trip on the romantic Yen stream, winding between majestic limestone mountains. The peaceful natural scenery and fresh air help visitors wash away the worries of daily life. Afterwards, visitors will begin their mountain climbing journey (or take a cable car) to visit famous pagodas, temples, and caves such as Thien Tru Pagoda and Huong Tich Cave. Huong Tich Cave, hailed as the "most beautiful cave in the southern sky," is the final and most important destination, where people pray for peace and good fortune for themselves and their families. Participating in the Perfume Pagoda Festival is a journey to find serenity in one's soul and to admire the magnificent beauty of creation.
"Oh friend, on the ninth day of the first month
Missing the Lim festival means missing half of life's worth"
This old folk verse is enough to express the charm of the Lim Festival, one of the largest and most characteristic cultural and artistic festivals of the Kinh Bac region. The festival is held on the 12th and 13th day of the first lunar month annually in Tien Du district, Bac Ninh province. It is an occasion to honor the art of Quan Ho singing, a UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The center of the Lim festival is Lim hill, where solemn procession and worship rituals take place. However, the most unique and attractive feature is the festive part with Quan Ho singing activities. Male singers in traditional silk tunics and headscarves and female singers in charming multi-layered dresses and flat palm hats stand on dragon boats, singing sweet and romantic call-and-response songs on the lake. In addition, the festival features many fascinating folk games such as wrestling, human chess, bamboo swings, weaving, and cooking contests. Coming to the Lim festival, visitors will be immersed in a culturally rich space and listen to heart-captivating folk melodies.
Held on the 5th day of the Lunar New Year annually at Dong Da Mound, Hanoi, the Dong Da Mound Festival is a festival rich in historical significance, commemorating the glorious victory of Emperor Quang Trung - Nguyen Hue in the great defeat of the Qing invaders in the spring of 1789. It is not just a cultural festival but also an occasion to educate the younger generation about the nation's patriotic and indomitable traditions.
The festival begins with solemn worship and incense-offering rituals at Boc Pagoda and the Quang Trung monument. This is followed by a grand palanquin procession and a performance reenacting the historic Ngoc Hoi - Dong Da battle. The image of the "Fire Dragon" being paraded amidst the resounding sound of drums and gongs symbolizes the swift and surprising strength of the Tay Son insurgent army. The Dong Da Mound Festival is a living epic, awakening national pride and deep gratitude to the heroes who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.
Both worship the national hero Saint Giong, one of the "Four Immortals" in Vietnamese beliefs, but the Giong Festival in Soc Son and Phu Dong (Hanoi) have their own distinct characteristics, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Both festivals express reverence and gratitude to the hero who defended the country, while also reflecting the martial spirit and the desire for peace of the Vietnamese people.
"No matter who goes north or south
Remember the Ancestors' Anniversary on the tenth day of the third month"
The Hung Kings' Temple Festival, or Hung Kings' Commemoration Day, held at the Hung Kings' Temple historical site on Nghia Linh Mountain, Phu Tho province, is a national-level festival. The main ceremony is held on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month, but festival activities often last for a whole week beforehand. This is an occasion for all Vietnamese people from around the world to turn towards their origins, demonstrating the "when drinking water, remember the source" ethic and national pride.
The Hung Kings' Temple Festival consists of two main parts: the ceremony and the festivities. The ceremony is solemnly conducted with traditional rituals such as the palanquin procession of surrounding communes and the incense-offering ceremony by delegations from the central to local levels at the Upper, Middle, and Lower Temples, and the Hung Kings' Tombs. The festive part is extremely lively and diverse, with folk cultural activities such as Xoan singing competitions (an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity), sticky rice cake pounding contests, square sticky rice cake wrapping contests, traditional sports competitions, and spectacular art performances. The Hung Kings' Temple Festival is truly a symbol of the unity and spiritual strength of the entire Vietnamese nation.
