This enchanting festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar, which typically falls in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. It’s a magical time when the moon is believed to be at its fullest and brightest, casting a beautiful silvery glow over the night sky.

The festivities surrounding the Mid-Autumn Festival are incredibly vibrant and diverse. For me, the most iconic image associated with this festival is the sight of children parading on the streets, holding colorful, beautifully crafted lanterns. These lanterns come in all shapes and sizes, from traditional star and carp shapes to modern cartoon characters. The warm, flickering light from the lanterns creates a truly mesmerizing atmosphere.

Another indispensable part of the celebration is the mooncake. These are special pastries that are only available around this time of year. They are often round, symbolizing the full moon and family reunion. There are two main types: a sweet one with fillings like lotus seed paste or red bean, and a savory one, which is my personal favorite, containing a salted egg yolk in the center to represent the moon. It is believed that the lion dance brings luck and fortune, so you can see them performing everywhere, from temples to storefronts.

The reason why this festival is so important, I believe, is twofold. Historically, it was a time for farmers to celebrate the end of the summer harvest. But over time, it has evolved to become the 'Children's Festival'. It’s a day dedicated to the joy and happiness of children. More profoundly, its core value lies in the theme of family reunion, or 'đoàn viên'. It’s an occasion for family members, no matter how far apart they live, to come together, strengthen their bonds, and create lasting memories. It beautifully preserves our cultural heritage and passes down timeless values of family and community to the younger generations. That’s why I cherish it so much."
